Old people are sad...

I've been going to see my grandfather in the hospital every other day or so, and its pretty sad to see what he's become. I remember him running and picking stuff up and going to work, normal things, that are just totally out of his league now. He's only 82, but he can't walk and can barley speak (he's had a couple strokes i think) and so he needs constant care, but he wants to come home but he can't because my grandmother can't look after him, my mothers here to look after her! she's pretty bad as well, needs a walking stick everywhere and I have to help her up stairs and stuff. also she hasn't been to see him in hospital, not since i've been here anyway. She'll sit in the car or stay home. it's just a little depressing.

It's weird to think that theirs was the generation that rebuilt Japan after WWII, and they did a pretty good job too, turning it into one of the worlds biggest economies in less than 40 years. But now they can't walk up stairs.

And when you look around Japan, there is an astounding number of old people, it's like the whole country shouldn't be able to function. You'll see old people doing crazy jobs too, like building houses and being delivery boys, well delivery men.

And everyone is crazy fucking polite and helpful and the service everywhere is just amazing.

This whole country is just a little bit cray.

Guys, I met a Nobel Prize Winner

So we went to Lindau overnight from Friday to Saturday and at my hotel, they were having the 62nd meeting of Nobel Laureates. It happens there every year and this one is dedicated to Physics. I met the guy, Prof. Doc. John Hall who won the Physics prize in 2005. He did work in Spectroscopy if you are interested. He was very nice, and we talked in the lift.
While we were waiting for a taxi that would take us to inner city Lindau, we saw several of them as well, like the guy who proved CFCs erode the ozone layer and the guy that showed the universe expansion is accelerating, who works at ANU.
It was pretty cool
