So I'm here in Dubai, in the "old" part of it (whatever is older than 30 years really,) and aside from the Mall of the Emirates where I had a massive Pounder burger from an american fast food chain, it's been very... like China :/
Like, it feels EXACTLY the same as China did, EXACTLY the same as Vietnam, Hong Kong, etc. ANywhere really, that isn't the West. Like, they even have the same footpaths and everything
so this is my theory about the world.
The world isn't split up into "asian, african, latin-american, american," etc. etc. It's split up into Western and not-Western (which is just about everything else.) A massive generalisation? perhaps, and I'm sure there's lots of key differences, but from what I've seen from places that aren't Europe or Australia, everything has the same sort of feel to it. I might be wrong, but I reckon if I were to go to Mozambique, Bolivia, Nigeria or Kazhakstan, the same social interactions would apply and you'd get that unusual feeling of being an outsider, but accepted by the locals :/
Life here in Dubai, for the people who aren't living in the massive 1200m2 houses or 800 meter high apartments, could almost be indistinguishable from what it was like 100 years ago or 1000 years ago (minus all the blackberries and televisions.) Society here seems to operate on a merchant-style economic structure, with people happy to interact with each other and a wheeling-and-dealing nature of trade.
Now imma go coz im like outta time for the internet and theres more i wanted to say, but in the meantime

yeh but in some countries living standerds are worse than before, and are slowly becoming worse. extreme poverty is growing and all that shit while you eat your hamburger.
and i also disagree on your two world thing. cause theres the west, the east, and africa. thats how i see it. cause i been to africa.... bitchs (the east is everything east of turkey)
australia is east of turkey
also, having been to vanuatu, it is quite unlike what vietnam was, as in a lot less crowded, more welcoming and the ni-vanuatu speak english and or french (and bislama, the local pidgin), and unless it falls under the same category as africa, i think pacific island nations should have a seperate group, like vanuatu, tonga, new zealand, samoa.
look up the poverty line. its like the countries that the english or spainsh "ruled" only like 5 are above that line. australia, cause we were so far away, america cause they had a revolution, new zealand cause well meh. but yeh. England and Spain occupied a lot of countries and had governments their and military but they left and the people in the countries didnt know how to run the country. Just as someone who has been to turkey and parts of asia where it isnt like europe. it doesnt feel the same but you do see the same reactions to westerners, a look of jealousy almost, but friendly at the same time. But europe and australia, the people do all look the same, like everyone is way too stressed out or to busy to be worrying about other people. Its like when you smile at someone here and they just ignore you but in turkey and fiji and other places, people smile, i donno if its cause they do just know how to relax, never worry about what the house prices are or whether they will lose thier job. sometime i think they are better off.

thats the point, australia was too far away, there would be a fight and by the time the english got here (actually 6 mths later) itd all be fine.
