Did you know that nuclear, coal, gas and oil powerstations all have the same purpose?
Yes I know they all create electricity but the thing that really shits me is that most of the time the energy created by the is to heat water and then drive a steam turbine!!
Like actually that is so annoying, 1 coal-fired power station creates about 400 million tonnes of CO2 every year and like on average the world produces 300 million tonnes of toxic waste every year from nuclear power stations.
And its mostly to heat water!!!
Like u'd think we could come up with a better way of creating electricity than heating water. it rly annoys me. we spend billions of dollars for coal, oil, gas and nuclear power stations to heat water!!
Anyway renewable energy for the win. it doesnt fucking need to heat water
Yeh im gonna go finish my ilp now

tide power + wind power ftw
we dont even need to boil the water to create steam ourselves, the turbines move due to natural forces.
pretty much
that was a waste of like 30 sec of my time
yeah but tidal power and wind power is not enough for countries like China.
if you get rid of coal and iron ore the Australian economy would be absolutely fucked
umm just to point out at the rate we're going, the planet will be fucked in 50 yrs. the australian economys not gonna matter that much when its underwater.
There'll be a solution eventually
once someone in our generation finds out
will it be you hogg?
(finger pointing)
thats all that seems to be done, finger pointing and someone needs to find something pretty soon or it'll be too late.
Are you doing anything different though?
i am. I've got an idea. The earth is getting oer populated so we will get slave labourers to turn these turbines. Many of the slave labourers will die but as least we will have electricity to power our little heaters and computers.
TO MARS!
I say delocalised solar electricity generation from solar panels is the way to go. Install them on the copious roof space that cities have, no loss in power transmission, no need to fund and maintain large, centralized power plants. The spare energy can be stored in batteries and drawn from over night, and I know that's not incredibly efficient but most energy (especially in workplaces) is used during the day. No carbon impacts, barely any maintainence, inexhaustible powersupply (okay well 5 billion years).
It will be expensive, but surely our society could divert some funds from buying plastic shit and bailing out companies dealing in fairytale money who create no physical wealth. And it won't be able to generate all the power needed immediately but it's something to transition towards and we can use nuclear during the switch (but not as a permanent solution, that stuff never goes away). And don't forget biomass, methane power from cow pooh in farms, wind and geothermal energy.
Plus what's wrong with steam? The concept that we still live in a steam punk world sounds awesome to me and giant electromagnets are just, well also awesome.
Anyway that's your random anon rant for the day.
The problem with renewable energy is not so much how well it works, but simply that it is less efficient. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it, but one windmill can power roughly 5000 houses. Now, divide 4,000,000 houses, offices, factories, facilities, and so forth, and that's 800 windmills. Whilst that might not SOUND like a lot, trying to find the space for them all, let alone the recourses, man power and COST even is going to be a problem. And that's just Sydney...
One often overlooked alternative is Fusion. I dun gettit, it's powered by stuff found in water, it'll cost 25c to run New York for a day, and it is CO2 AND Nuclear Waste free, yet most people go on about Solar or Water. Sure, it may not have been invented yet, but give it time, and we'll have the power of the Sun on Earth!
who r u?
ru, just to tell you those turbines spin at 3,600 rpm which is fucking fast.
and yes, i didnt say there weren't other options, i merely stated that when they first built powerstations, it was odd that they all lead to heating water. like i just thought ppl were more inventive than that
maxim, u do no that a fusion reacton at the moment takes almost as much energy to make as it gives out and you are making the assuption that every other person has made with all the other things that turned out to be harmful, "it'll be fine" thats what they said about thalidomide and oil and nuclear power before chenoble.
Oh and on ur little renewable energy thing, its been proven that a space of 50km squared (possibly in the desert) that is covered in solar panels could power all australian homes. the australian government is just coal obsessed and think they are awesome cause we have like 300 yrs worth of coal and they dont give a fuck. so yeh
@ Action man
Part of the reason I was saying delocalised solar panel power generation was it would require no extra space, we already have plenty of roofspace. I know it won't be the whole power solution, but it will help a lot.
And yes it's costly, so fucking what? What do we have money to spend on, well relieving poverty and malnutrition, but we don't do that anyway. As I said before the US spent $1 trillion bailing out an industry which appears to do bugger all in terms of concrete results. Plus it's a one time cost.
And with the fusion thing, yeah cool idea, not going to be 25cents a day for NY (where the hell did you get that figure) and considering we are currently making massive underground reactors going from 150,000,000K to 5K in an attempt to create it, it seems far-fetched to think it's going to be a) easy b) cheap c) doable d) available in the bear future.
Plus solar power is a one time cost, you pay more up front but you get free energy for virtually ever. I know the whole spending a lot now to be sustainable later goes against the whole western economy, but if we're serious about finding alternative energy sources (for a vast amount of reasons) then we're going to have to start investing in something which will be more costly in the short term but ultimately more sustainable.
Plus stop burning the world's oil, it's used to make plastic and plastic is pretty much the main material in everything we make now days.
erm yea
.......
cool story bro!
Hmmm. Annon, who are you? And considering you referred to me by Action instead of my real name, then you probably don't know us to well... unless you do, and you're using reverpsychology on us! :O It's a conspiracy!
But seriously, who are you?
Maybe he/she is just some random person on your blog?
Then why don't they just sign in, or use their name at least!
cause they're pedos
I say we all just sit around and do nothing.
oh, wait, hang on, we are.
My dad met this guy in New York who's insanely close to getting fusion to work.
Cool, huh? Would be so great if that actually happened.
