how to write a prac report

how to write a succesful practical task as requested. warning: is kinda long.
abbridged cause scanner isnt working.

if only we had bbcode-esque spoiler functionality (something to work on)
maybe I'll put it somewhere else and link?

Cover page
Course
title of report
name
date

synopsis / abstract
(if you dont have this you wont do well.)
state aim
mention method
summarise results using numerical information where appropriate
state conclusion
main ideas in summary form
100 - 150 words

aim and introduction
briefly state purpose + scope of practical.
do not include detailed information about method.
state what you investigated. give background information.
50-70 words

theory
Expand on introduction to focus on underlying scientific principles.
References to any relationships with any other scientific principles
basically explain the theory behind it
(use equation editor in MS word)
use diagrams if applicable
100-150 words

method
set out procedure you followed:
specify materials, equiptment, also what you did with them.
easy stuff.
use diagrams if needed.
100-150 words

results
present findings and observations:
*present appropriate raw data
*include clear labelled diagrams
*calculate results from raw data
*present derived results in tables/graphs as appropriate (derived results = results)
*write brief description of results
present logically without interpretation or comment.
raw data
organise it in systematic format, ie table. If you have a large amount of measurements/recordings put them in appendix of report and summarise.
calculations
You might be req'd to include formulae and details of calculations to show how you arrived at final results.
in other words: if applicable, use mathematics to predict what the result should be, and present alongside the final results.
with a series of repeated calculations, only provide detailed working for the first set of results, then list following results and note that the method used to derive them was identical.
tables and graphs
when appropriate (ie always) use tables and graphs to present your results.
*number tables and graphs in order
*give each a title
*include headings and units
If graphing results, the choice of graph - histogram, line graph, pie chart - will be determined by data (continuous is histogram.)
more than one set of results: plot on same graph for comparison.
label axes and plot clearly, using a set of symbols.
all of this (results section) has approx 50-100 words

discussion
Key part of any report. shows you understand whats going on. interpret them by looking back at the aim, see how relatable the results are.
do not repeat your results, but explain what they show and and what they mean.
what is important in your results? why?
questions provided in the sheet, if any, tell you what else you need to discuss here.
*relate results to current knowledge/sci practice outlined in intro and show you understand theoretical basis of prac.
*where relevant, compare to previous studies, comment on similiarities or differences.
*comment on any unexpected results or outcomes
*acknowledge the problems, limitations, inconsistencies or errors as well as probable reasons for.
*suggest further investigation possibilites in your experiment.
in other words, this is the part where you blame everyone and everything else for your results not looking anything like what you calculated.
100-150 words

conclusion
the conclusion is a seperate section. summarise findings as relatable to stated aim of practical.
40-70 words

appendix
detailed information reffered to in the report
references
sources of published information used in the report.
ie bibliography.

sorry was long, hop helps anyone else by coincidence.

no, I no longer need the results of the experiment.
